Minutes for Nov 20, 2008
Present: Present: Sue Carlson, President; Ros Strong, Vice President; Jo Cameron, Secretary; Bruce Cameron.
As there was no quorum, no business nor votes were undertaken. The minutes of October 23, 2008, will be
posted on the Town website and sent to members who do not have internet.
1. Fort Edgecomb Bicentennial: Becky Benton's draft letter to the Edgecomb Board of Selectmen was discussed, with some minor clarifications and edits. Bruce will present it to the Board at their Nov. 24 meeting.
2. Jo has discovered that the Friends of Fort Edgecomb never completed their original application for federal non-profit 501(c)(3) status. She has talked to the IRS about this, and will apply anew when appropriate materials have been received. The IRS estimates 60 days from receipt of application (Form 1023) until notification of approval.
3. FOFE banking: Sue and Jo, as Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer of FOFE respectively, have agreed to move the FOFE account from Savings Bank of Maine to The First National Bank of Damariscotta, and will meet with Bruce and the bank on Tuesday, November 25, at 10:00 a.m. to open the new account. The First accepts State tax exemption.
4. Website: In light of this problem, Sue suggested that EHS pay for website, with FOFE to reimburse half, rather than vice versa.
5. Funding: Sue asked whether the Hammond Trust could be tapped for a survey of industrial sites, to be conducted by Rose-Marie Ballard. In addition to EHS interest, the work would be of value to the Comprehensive Plan, for adding an historic/scenic overlay to the Plan's maps, and for developing a sample ordinance. Discussion included the State of Maine's policy on identifying archaeological sites: although the discouragement of vandals and "pot-hunters" is desirable, it would be useful for legitimate historians and for town planning agencies to know where the sites, for the most part prehistoric, are, for avoiding damage to sensitive sites. A starter list of such ruins: the tide mill on Parsons Creek, waterworks on Old County Road, various ferry and goods ships' landing sites; quarries and open pit mines (mica, feldspar, what else?); ship and boat building; salt works, brick works, ice works.
6. Photo Identification: In re the 2005 Boothbay Register/Wiscasset Newspaper article by Paula Gibbs on the building of the Cod Cove bridge and causeway in 1924,the "Dodge house with large barn" commandeered by the then State Highway Department for its horses and work crew, Bruce suggested it may be the present Partridge Antiques barn on Dodge Road just off Route 1.
Jo suggested that Paula Gibbs be invited as a speaker during the Spring 2009 session of EHS meetings.
Another suggestion for Spring 2009 was to hold it at the Town Hall, to make Rose-Marie Ballard's historic architecture survey available to interested persons and thus, to gain more members!
Thus endeth the last of the 2008 Triad of EHS meetings!
Respectfully submitted,
Joanna M. Cameron
